Our Trails - Our Town

Police Officer walking with Citizens on Trail

Program Overview

Durham’s trails and greenways are important to the health and well being of our community. Thousands of residents and visitors enjoy long hours walking, cycling, and jogging on our trails and greenways. That’s why we need your help to keep our trails safe and clean.

We’ve heard you loud-and-clear that trails and greenways are important to you and your family. In fact, 90% of the respondents in our 2011 PARCS survey said that trails and greenways are their highest priority for the city.

To ensure our trails and greenways are safe and clean, we’ve launched the “Our Trails, Our Town” program, a long-term plan to provide strategic direction for planning, safety, management, promotions, and use of Durham’s trails.

We are a team made up of City of Durham departments, residents, partners, nonprofit organizations, and private sector companies working together toward a shared vision for one of our most treasured community assets.

Program Strategy

The City is also working with Capitol Broadcasting Company on the “Our Trails, Our Town” program and the strategy will focus on 3 main areas:

  1. Beautification - ongoing work on trailheads and the Adopt-A-Trail / Park
  2. Security - storage of UTVs, plans to designate sections of the trail as pilots for cameras and lighting
  3. Public Awareness - series of public service announcements with a focus on safety

Whether you are a resident or business owner, we want you to join our team and get involved by attending one of our events, joining our Trail Watch Volunteer Program, or by adopting a trail or a park.

By working together, we can ensure our trails and greenways are sources of pride for generations to come.
