Park History
The park is named after the department's first and long-service Director, C.R. Wood. The small building in the park (called the "Hayestown Center") and the surrounding neighborhood were named after Elton Clyde Hayes, who first lived in Durham during the late 1800s. Hayes was considered the "pioneer community leader [and] first settler in the southeastern section of the city which is known as 'Hayestown,'" according to Carolina Times.
